Isai Scheinberg: PokerStars Co-Founder and Poker Pioneer

Isai Scheinberg is an Israeli-Canadian businessman, software engineer, poker player, and online poker pioneer best known for co-founding PokerStars with his son Mark Scheinberg in 2001. Although he has recorded live tournament results of his own, Scheinberg's importance to poker comes primarily from his role in building PokerStars into the dominant online poker company of its era and helping expand access to the game around the world.

His influence has earned recognition throughout the poker industry, including the WPT Honors Award and repeated consideration for the Poker Hall of Fame. As of August 2026, Scheinberg has been a Poker Hall of Fame finalist seven times but has not been inducted.

Who Is Isai Scheinberg?

Isai Scheinberg is one of the most influential business figures in modern poker history.

A former software engineer with a strong mathematics and technology background, Scheinberg combined his interest in poker with his technical experience at a time when real-money online poker was still in its early stages.

That combination eventually led to PokerStars, which launched in 2001 and became one of the companies most closely associated with the worldwide growth of online poker during the 2000s.

Scheinberg is a dual Canadian and Israeli national. He grew up in Lithuania before later living in Israel and Canada.

While his public reputation is overwhelmingly tied to the business side of poker, Scheinberg has also competed in live tournaments dating back to the 1990s.

From Software Engineering to Online Poker

Before entering the online poker industry, Scheinberg built a career in technology.

Forbes has reported that he earned a master's degree in mathematics from Moscow State University and later worked for IBM. After moving to Canada, he continued working in computer programming and technology.

His technical background became particularly important as internet poker began developing during the late 1990s.

Scheinberg recognized the potential for players to compete against one another online rather than being limited to traditional casinos and cardrooms. He and his son Mark subsequently co-founded PokerStars in 2001.

Founding PokerStars

PokerStars grew from a relatively new online poker operation into the largest online poker platform in the world during Scheinberg's leadership.

The company's expansion coincided with one of the most important periods in poker history.

In 2003, Tennessee accountant Chris Moneymaker qualified for the World Series of Poker Main Event through an online satellite on PokerStars. Moneymaker went on to win the Main Event for $2.5 million.

His victory helped fuel what became known as the "Moneymaker Effect," a surge of interest that brought millions of new players into poker during the 2000s.

PokerStars was positioned directly in the middle of that growth.

The site's large tournament schedule, international player base, satellite system, and expanding online tournament ecosystem helped make internet poker accessible to players who might never have traveled to a casino for a major event.

By the height of the poker boom, PokerStars had become one of the defining companies in the global poker industry.

Black Friday and the Full Tilt Poker Settlement

Scheinberg's PokerStars career also included one of the most consequential legal periods in online poker history.

On April 15, 2011, the U.S. government unsealed criminal charges against executives associated with PokerStars, Full Tilt Poker, and Absolute Poker/Ultimate Bet. The date became known throughout the poker community as "Black Friday."

PokerStars subsequently left the U.S. real-money market.

A major development followed in 2012 when PokerStars reached a settlement with the U.S. government involving Full Tilt Poker.

Under the agreement announced by the U.S. Department of Justice, PokerStars agreed to forfeit $547 million to the United States, reimburse approximately $184 million owed to Full Tilt's non-U.S. players, and acquire Full Tilt's forfeited assets. U.S. Full Tilt customers were able to pursue repayment through a government-administered process funded through the settlement.

The agreement became an important part of Scheinberg's reputation within the poker community because it provided a path toward returning player balances that had been inaccessible after Full Tilt's collapse.

Scheinberg's own criminal case remained unresolved for several more years.

In January 2020, he surrendered to U.S. authorities after extradition proceedings in Switzerland. In March 2020, he pleaded guilty to one count of operating an illegal gambling business.

A federal judge later sentenced him to time served and a monetary fine in September 2020, bringing his long-running Black Friday criminal case to an end.

Sale of PokerStars

The Scheinberg family's ownership of PokerStars ended in 2014.

Amaya Gaming Group agreed to acquire the PokerStars parent company, along with Full Tilt Poker, in a transaction valued at approximately $4.9 billion.

The deal represented one of the largest transactions in online gambling history and ended the Scheinberg family's direct control of the company they had built.

Scheinberg has not returned to an operating role at PokerStars.

His reputation within poker has instead increasingly focused on the long-term impact the company had on online poker, tournament qualification, international competition, and the growth of the game during the poker boom.

Isai Scheinberg's Live Poker Career

Scheinberg has played live tournament poker for decades, although tournament competition has never been the primary source of his reputation.

His recorded results stretch back to the 1990s.

Among his early appearances was a cash at the 1996 World Series of Poker. He later reached a final table in a Limit Hold'em event in 1998 and finished eighth in a No-Limit Hold'em event during the 2008 European Poker Tour Grand Final in Monte Carlo.

One of his few recorded tournament victories came in 2014 when he won a UKIPT High Roller on the Isle of Man.

Scheinberg attracted additional attention in 2023 when he entered the WSOP Main Event for the first time. He advanced through Day 2 and returned for Day 3, a notable appearance for someone who had generally remained outside poker's tournament spotlight.

His biggest tournament result arrived one year later.

At the 2024 World Series of Poker, Scheinberg reached the final table of the $50,000 No-Limit Hold'em High Roller. The tournament attracted 178 entries and included many of the world's leading high-stakes players.

Scheinberg finished seventh for $278,552, which remains the largest recorded live tournament cash of his career.

Later in 2024, he also cashed for $50,000 in the $25,000 WSOP Paradise Super Main Event.

According to The Hendon Mob, Scheinberg has $374,190 in recorded live tournament earnings as of August 2026.

Playing Style and Poker Reputation

There is not enough widely documented tournament evidence to responsibly categorize Scheinberg with a specific playing style such as tight-aggressive, loose-aggressive, or highly mathematical.

He has never maintained the tournament schedule normally associated with a full-time professional poker player.

Instead, his live appearances have generally been selective.

That makes Scheinberg unusual among prominent poker figures. He has enough tournament experience to compete in major events and has reached a WSOP high-roller final table, but his standing within poker was built almost entirely away from tournament leaderboards.

His reputation is that of a builder and industry pioneer first and a tournament player second.

WPT Honors and Poker Hall of Fame Consideration

Recognition of Scheinberg's contributions increased significantly after his departure from PokerStars.

The World Poker Tour selected Scheinberg as a recipient of its 2022 WPT Honors Award alongside longtime WPT broadcaster Vince Van Patten. The award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the WPT and the broader poker community.

Scheinberg has also become one of the most frequently discussed Poker Hall of Fame candidates of the modern era.

He first reached the final ballot in 2020.

By 2026, Scheinberg had been selected as a finalist seven times. Unlike most Hall of Fame candidates, his case rests primarily on the "builder" side of the Hall's criteria rather than tournament championships or high-stakes cash-game accomplishments.

The WSOP's official 2026 finalist announcement described Scheinberg as a pioneering industry figure whose influence extended far beyond the poker table.

Scheinberg did not receive induction in 2026. Jason Koon became the only candidate to reach the required voting threshold and was named the sole member of the 2026 Poker Hall of Fame class.

As of August 2026, Scheinberg therefore remains outside the Poker Hall of Fame despite seven finalist appearances.

Why Isai Scheinberg Matters to Poker

Scheinberg's importance is difficult to measure using conventional poker statistics.

He does not have millions of dollars in tournament winnings, a collection of WSOP bracelets, or a long list of televised championship victories.

His impact came from helping change where and how poker was played.

PokerStars gave players around the world access to tournaments, cash games, satellites, and international competition without requiring them to live near a major casino. The company's rise also overlapped with the expansion of televised poker, the Moneymaker Effect, and the enormous increase in WSOP participation during the 2000s.

The Full Tilt settlement became another significant chapter. PokerStars' involvement helped create a mechanism through which large amounts of stranded player money could eventually be repaid.

For those reasons, Scheinberg is regularly evaluated alongside poker's influential executives, tournament organizers, and other builders rather than solely against professional players.

Is Isai Scheinberg Still Playing Poker?

Scheinberg has continued making occasional appearances in major live tournaments after leaving PokerStars.

His 2023 WSOP Main Event appearance and 2024 WSOP $50,000 High Roller final table demonstrated that he remains willing to compete at major events despite never becoming a full-time tournament professional.

His tournament activity should therefore be described as occasional rather than retired or inactive.

As of August 2026, his most important recent recognition remains his seventh appearance as a Poker Hall of Fame finalist.
