Jerry Yang: 2007 WSOP Main Event Champion and $8.25 Million Winner
POKER HALL OF FAME
Inducted 2014
Jerry Yang entered the 2007 World Series of Poker Main Event as a relative unknown and left Las Vegas as poker’s world champion. After qualifying through a $225 satellite, Yang defeated a field of 6,358 entries to win the $10,000 No-Limit Hold’em World Championship and its $8.25 million first prize.
The victory remains the defining achievement of Yang’s poker career. He owns one WSOP bracelet, and the World Series of Poker lists him with no WSOP Circuit rings. His tournament history also shows that he continued competing long after his championship, including WSOP and Circuit appearances into the 2020s.
As of September 15, 2026, The Hendon Mob lists Yang with $8,568,585 in live tournament earnings and a career-best cash of $8.25 million. Tournament databases can change as new results are recorded.
⠀
Who Is Jerry Yang?
Jerry Yang is an American poker player of Hmong and Laotian background best known for winning the 2007 WSOP Main Event.
Yang was born in Laos in 1967. His family fled the country during his childhood and spent several years in a refugee camp in Thailand before immigrating to the United States. His later memoir, All In: From Refugee Camp to Poker Champ, described that journey and his eventual rise to poker’s most recognizable championship.
Before his Main Event victory, Yang built a professional career outside poker. The WSOP described him during the 2007 tournament as a psychologist and social worker from Southern California who held a master’s degree in health psychology.
Poker was still relatively new to him at the time. According to the WSOP, Yang had started playing only about two years before reaching the 2007 Main Event final table.
⠀
Jerry Yang’s Road to the 2007 WSOP Main Event
Yang did not buy directly into the $10,000 Main Event. He earned his seat through a satellite tournament at Pechanga Resort & Casino in Southern California.
His total investment for the opportunity was $225.
That path placed Yang among the recreational and satellite qualifiers who became an important part of the poker boom. Earlier Main Event champions such as Chris Moneymaker had already demonstrated how a relatively inexpensive qualifier could lead to poker’s world championship.
Yang entered the 2007 final table with 8.459 million chips. He was not the chip leader and was considerably less experienced than several players remaining in the tournament, but his final-table performance transformed his position quickly.
⠀
Winning the 2007 WSOP Main Event
The 2007 WSOP Main Event attracted 6,358 entries and generated a prize pool of $59,784,954.
Yang ultimately defeated Canadian player Tuan Lam heads-up for the championship. The final hand ended when Yang completed a straight on the river, securing the title and the $8.25 million first-place prize.
The result gave Yang his first WSOP bracelet.
His victory also placed him between two other champions from an important period in Main Event history. Jamie Gold won the record-setting 8,773-entry Main Event in 2006, while Peter Eastgate succeeded Yang as champion in 2008.
The 2007 championship was especially remarkable because Yang had never recorded a WSOP cash before winning the Main Event. He went directly from having no WSOP cashes to capturing poker’s most prestigious tournament.
⠀
Jerry Yang’s WSOP Career
Yang’s Main Event title accounts for the overwhelming majority of his career tournament winnings, but he continued recording WSOP results after becoming champion.
As of September 2026, the WSOP player database credits Yang with:
One WSOP bracelet
Zero WSOP Circuit rings
18 WSOP and WSOP-affiliated cashes listed on his current WSOP profile
Two final-table appearances listed by the WSOP
More than $8.38 million in WSOP-listed earnings
His bracelet remains the 2007 Main Event championship.
Yang returned to the WSOP after his victory and began adding smaller cashes in 2010. His tournament record later expanded across regular WSOP events, WSOP Circuit stops and other live tournaments.
One of his strongest later WSOP Circuit performances came in January 2022, when he reached the final table of the $1,700 Main Event at Thunder Valley Casino Resort. Yang finished fourth for $57,772.
⠀
Tournament Results After the Main Event
Yang never matched the extraordinary size of his 2007 championship score, but his later results show that he remained involved in tournament poker rather than disappearing completely from competition.
Among his notable post-championship results:
Fifth place in the 2010 NBC National Heads-Up Poker Championship for $75,000
Fourth place in a 2010 Venetian Deep Stack Extravaganza no-limit hold’em event for $30,380
Fourth place in the 2022 WSOP Circuit Thunder Valley Main Event for $57,772
19th place in the 2023 WSOP $777 Lucky 7’s event for $26,500
71st place in the 2025 WSOP $3,000 No-Limit Hold’em event for $13,234
His 2025 result is significant for an evergreen profile because it demonstrates tournament activity nearly two decades after his Main Event victory.
⠀
Jerry Yang’s Live Tournament Earnings
As of September 15, 2026, The Hendon Mob lists Yang with $8,568,585 in total live tournament earnings.
His $8.25 million Main Event victory remains his largest recorded cash by a wide margin.
That means the 2007 championship represents more than 96 percent of his listed career live earnings. Yang’s tournament résumé is therefore very different from those of many long-term high-volume professionals: one extraordinary result defines the financial side of his career, while dozens of smaller results document his continued participation in poker.
Live earnings figures are not the same as profit. Public tournament databases generally record gross payouts and do not account for buy-ins, travel expenses, staking arrangements, taxes or other costs.
⠀
Did Jerry Yang Win Any WPT or EPT Titles?
Yang is not credited with a World Poker Tour championship or European Poker Tour title in the major tournament databases reviewed for this profile.
His major championship accomplishment remains the 2007 WSOP Main Event.
Yang has nevertheless appeared in WPT competition. The World Poker Tour maintains a player page for him, and he has participated in WPT events including the Bay 101 Shooting Star.
⠀
Jerry Yang’s Playing Reputation
Yang’s most famous tournament performance was defined by aggression.
At the 2007 Main Event final table, he accumulated chips quickly and repeatedly put opponents under pressure. His willingness to play large pots made him one of the central figures at a final table where he began well behind the chip leader.
It would be misleading, however, to define a player’s entire style from a single televised tournament. Yang has never built the same extensive high-stakes tournament résumé as professionals who compete year-round at the highest buy-in levels.
His place in poker history rests primarily on what he accomplished during one of the game’s most important tournaments.
⠀
Charity Work After the WSOP Victory
Yang publicly committed part of his Main Event winnings to charitable causes before the tournament was finished.
After winning, he said that 10 percent of his prize would be divided among the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Feed the Children and Ronald McDonald House.
His charitable work became an important part of his public identity after the championship. In later years, Yang participated in and hosted charity poker events, using the visibility created by his WSOP victory to support fundraising efforts.
That work connects directly with his pre-poker background in psychology and social services.
⠀
Jerry Yang’s Book All In
In 2011, Yang published All In: From Refugee Camp to Poker Champ with author Mark Tabb.
The memoir covers far more than poker. It recounts Yang’s childhood in Laos, his family’s flight from the country, life in a refugee camp in Thailand, immigration to the United States and his eventual victory in the WSOP Main Event.
The book also gave Yang an opportunity to explain how his experiences before poker shaped his charitable work after becoming world champion.
PokerNews interviewed Yang when the book was released, and Yang explained that repeated encouragement from people he met while doing charity work helped persuade him to tell his story.
⠀
Why Jerry Yang Matters in Poker History
Yang’s lasting place in poker is secured by the 2007 Main Event championship.
The Main Event is not simply another bracelet tournament. Its winner is recognized as poker’s world champion, and the tournament’s history forms a direct line through generations of the game’s most recognizable players.
Yang also represents one of the clearest examples of poker’s open-tournament structure producing an unexpected champion. He had been playing for only a short period, qualified through a $225 satellite and then defeated more than 6,300 entries for an $8.25 million prize.
His story became part of the broader poker-boom narrative that showed recreational players could sit in the same tournament as established professionals and, on the right run, win the biggest title in the game.
⠀
Where Is Jerry Yang Now?
Yang has remained connected to live poker.
Public tournament records show cashes during the 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025 WSOP periods, including his 71st-place finish in the $3,000 No-Limit Hold’em bracelet event at the 2025 World Series of Poker.
There is no reliable basis to describe Yang as retired from poker.
His tournament schedule is far lighter than that of a full-time high-volume professional, but his recent results show continued participation well beyond the period immediately following his Main Event championship.
