Kenny Tran: WSOP Heads-Up Champion and High-Stakes Cash Game Specialist
POKER HALL OF FAME
Inducted 2014
Kenny Tran built his poker reputation in high-stakes cash games before establishing a tournament résumé highlighted by a World Series of Poker bracelet, major mixed-game results and multiple deep runs in the WSOP Main Event. The Vietnam-born American professional won the 2008 $10,000 Heads-Up No-Limit Hold’em Championship and has accumulated more than $2.7 million in recorded live tournament earnings.
According to The Hendon Mob, Tran has $2,716,165 in live tournament earnings as of September 28, 2026, with a career-best recorded cash of $539,056. Hendon Mob lists his nationality as United States, his birthplace as Vietnam and his residence as Arcadia, California. Tournament databases change as new results are added, so career earnings and rankings should be treated as current figures rather than permanent totals.
⠀
Who Is Kenny Tran?
Kenny Tran is an American poker professional best known for high-stakes live cash games and for winning a WSOP bracelet in heads-up no-limit hold’em. His tournament record dates to the late 1990s, but much of his reputation was built away from major tournament leaderboards.
In interviews with Card Player, Tran described learning poker in 1992 after playing with friends while working at McDonald’s. He later moved to California and said he began playing poker full time in 1998. Over the following years, he progressed from low-limit games to some of the highest-stakes live cash games available. Card Player’s 2008 profile of Tran documented that progression as his tournament profile was beginning to rise.

Kenny Tran’s Breakthrough at the 2007 WSOP
Tran’s tournament reputation changed significantly during the 2007 World Series of Poker.
He reached the final table of the $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. Championship, one of the most demanding mixed-game tournaments on the WSOP schedule. Tran finished fifth for $444,000 in a 148-entry field that was ultimately won by Freddy Deeb. The official WSOP results for the 2007 H.O.R.S.E. Championship confirm the fifth-place finish.
Tran then made another deep run in the 2007 WSOP Main Event. He finished 16th out of 6,358 entries and earned $381,302. His run included a widely remembered televised call against Roy Winston, and the WSOP later highlighted that hand when revisiting notable moments from the 2007 Main Event.
Those performances showed that a player primarily associated with cash games could also contend deep in poker’s largest championship tournaments.
⠀
2008 WSOP Heads-Up Championship
Tran’s biggest tournament victory came one year later.
At the 2008 World Series of Poker, he won the $10,000 Heads-Up No-Limit Hold’em Championship. The event attracted 256 entries, and Tran defeated Alec Torelli in the final to collect $539,056 and his first WSOP bracelet.
The tournament required Tran to advance through eight consecutive heads-up matches. Official WSOP results for the 2008 Heads-Up Championship list Tran as the winner, with Torelli finishing second and Vanessa Selbst and Jonathan Jaffe reaching the semifinals.
The $539,056 victory remains Tran’s largest recorded live tournament cash according to Hendon Mob.

WSOP Bracelet, Cashes and Career Record
As of September 28, 2026, the World Series of Poker player database credits Tran with:
One WSOP bracelet
One WSOP victory
Zero WSOP Circuit rings
Three final tables in the database's All Brands view
21 cashes in the database's All Brands view
$2,423,615 in earnings tracked by that database view
The WSOP site's All Brands view includes World Poker Tour results as well as WSOP events. Its aggregate cash, final-table and earnings figures are therefore not WSOP-series-only totals, and they remain distinct from The Hendon Mob's broader recorded live tournament total.
Tran has not won a World Poker Tour Main Tour title. The World Poker Tour player database lists four WPT Main Tour cashes totaling $295,857, including a 10th-place finish in the 2008 WPT World Championship for $158,290.
⠀
Kenny Tran’s 2022 WSOP Main Event Run
Fourteen years after winning his bracelet, Tran produced another major Main Event result.
He advanced to 17th place in the 2022 WSOP Main Event, which drew 8,663 entries. Tran earned $410,000, his second-largest recorded live tournament cash.
PokerNews reported that Tran was eliminated on Day 7 after calling all in from the big blind against Tom Kunze. His 17th-place finish demonstrated that he remained capable of making a deep run in the Main Event long after his breakout performances of 2007 and 2008.
⠀
Playing Style and Cash-Game Reputation
Tran’s career has long been associated with live cash poker.
Contemporary poker coverage regularly described him as a high-stakes cash-game specialist, particularly in California. Card Player reported in 2008 that Tran played regularly at Commerce Casino and was highly regarded by other professionals for his live cash-game ability and reading of opponents.
That background helps explain why heads-up no-limit hold’em became such an important part of his tournament résumé. Heads-up poker places unusual emphasis on adapting to a single opponent, recognizing betting patterns and making decisions with very wide hand ranges. Tran’s 2008 championship provided a major tournament result that complemented the reputation he had already established in live cash games.
His 2007 H.O.R.S.E. final table also demonstrated experience beyond no-limit hold’em. H.O.R.S.E. rotates through hold’em, Omaha eight-or-better, razz, seven-card stud and seven-card stud eight-or-better, requiring proficiency across several forms of poker.
⠀
Why Kenny Tran Matters in Poker
Tran’s career illustrates the difference between tournament visibility and a player’s broader reputation within professional poker.
Before his bracelet win, much of his standing came from cash games rather than championship trophies. His 2007 WSOP results brought that reputation to a wider tournament audience, while his 2008 heads-up title gave him one of poker’s most recognizable accomplishments.
The combination of a WSOP bracelet, a final table in the $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. Championship and deep Main Event finishes in both 2007 and 2022 gives Tran a tournament record that extends well beyond a single major victory.
⠀
Kenny Tran’s Career Earnings
As of September 28, 2026, Hendon Mob lists Tran with $2,716,165 in live tournament earnings. His largest recorded score remains the $539,056 he earned for winning the 2008 WSOP Heads-Up No-Limit Hold’em Championship.
Tournament earnings do not account for a player’s cash-game wins or losses. That distinction is particularly important with Tran because much of his poker reputation was established in live cash games, where comprehensive public financial records do not exist.
⠀
Is Kenny Tran Still Playing Poker?
Tran has continued to record tournament results well beyond his peak television exposure in the late 2000s.
Hendon Mob’s most recent listed live cash as of September 28, 2026, is a 23rd-place finish in a C$600 no-limit hold’em/pot-limit Omaha event at the 2025 WSOP International Circuit stop in Calgary. He earned C$1,170, recorded as $841 in the database.
There is no reliable basis to describe Tran as retired. His tournament schedule has been far lighter than during his most visible years, but his recorded results show tournament participation as recently as October 2025.
