Boeree grew up in Kent, England, and studied astrophysics at the University of Manchester, earning a first-class degree. According to Boeree's official biography, she was introduced to poker in 2005 after being selected for a television program built around teaching inexperienced contestants the game.
Poker quickly developed from an unexpected television opportunity into a professional career. Boeree spent more than a decade competing internationally, became a Team PokerStars Pro and established herself through major live tournament results.

Boeree's defining early-career breakthrough came at the 2010 PokerStars.it European Poker Tour San Remo Main Event.
The €5,000 Main Event attracted 1,240 entries and generated a prize pool of more than €6 million. Boeree reached the final table and ultimately defeated Jakob Carlsson heads-up to win the title and €1.25 million.
The victory transformed her tournament résumé. Before San Remo, Boeree had already recorded live results, but winning one of the largest EPT events of the era placed her among poker's recognizable international tournament professionals.

Liv Boeree's WSOP Bracelet
Boeree added a World Series of Poker bracelet in 2017 when she teamed with Igor Kurganov in the $10,000 Tag Team No-Limit Hold'em Championship.
The event drew 102 teams. Boeree and Kurganov won the tournament for a team prize of $273,964, with the prize money divided between the members of the winning team.
The victory gave both players their first WSOP bracelets.

The $2.8 Million WSOP Paradise Run

Poker, Mathematics and Decision-Making
Boeree's background has always distinguished her from many poker professionals.
Her astrophysics education provided a natural connection to probability, quantitative reasoning and decision-making under uncertainty. Rather than presenting a specific table style such as "tight-aggressive" or "loose-aggressive" as an established fact, it is more accurate to say that mathematics, game theory and decision-making have been recurring themes in how Boeree has publicly discussed poker.

In 2014, she helped co-found Raising for Effective Giving, commonly known as REG. The organization encouraged poker players and others to direct charitable donations toward causes its members considered highly effective and comparatively neglected.

Charitable giving also intersected directly with her poker career. After Boeree and Kurganov won their WSOP bracelet in 2017, the WSOP reported that they intended to donate half of their winnings to REG.

Boeree says she officially retired from professional poker in 2019.

On her official website, Boeree explains that her attention increasingly moved toward problems involving incentives, coordination, artificial intelligence, environmental issues and other large-scale challenges.
