Peter Eastgate: 2008 WSOP Main Event Champion
POKER HALL OF FAME
Inducted 2014
Peter Eastgate secured his place in poker history by winning the 2008 World Series of Poker Main Event for $9,152,416. The Danish player was 22 years old when he defeated Ivan Demidov heads-up, making Eastgate the youngest WSOP Main Event champion at the time.
The championship remains the defining result of a relatively brief but highly successful tournament career. As of September 15, 2026, The Hendon Mob lists Eastgate with $11,131,450 in live tournament earnings, with his 2008 Main Event victory accounting for his largest recorded cash.
Eastgate continued producing major results after becoming world champion, including a PokerStars Caribbean Adventure side-event victory, a runner-up finish in the European Poker Tour London Main Event and another WSOP final table. He later stepped away from poker as a full-time pursuit and has maintained a much lower public profile than most modern Main Event champions.

Who Is Peter Eastgate?
Peter Eastgate is a Danish poker player best known for winning the 2008 WSOP Main Event. He emerged from Denmark's online poker scene and was already playing high-limit cash games before his breakthrough in Las Vegas.
Eastgate was associated particularly with heads-up and high-stakes no-limit hold'em online. Contemporary coverage described him as a strong online professional before the wider poker audience became familiar with him through the Main Event.
His live tournament record began gaining attention before the championship. Eastgate finished ninth in the 2007 Irish Open Main Event and recorded European Poker Tour cashes in Copenhagen and London during 2008.
Those results offered signs of his ability, but nothing approached the scale of what followed at the 2008 World Series of Poker.

Peter Eastgate Wins the 2008 WSOP Main Event
The official WSOP results list 6,844 entries in the 2008 $10,000 No-Limit Hold'em Main Event. Eastgate survived the massive field and advanced to a final table that became an important milestone in WSOP history.
The 2008 tournament introduced the delayed Main Event final-table concept that became known as the November Nine. Instead of playing continuously through to a champion in July, the final nine players returned months later to determine the winner.
Eastgate entered that final table fourth in chips. He eventually reached heads-up play against Russia's Ivan Demidov and closed out the championship to earn $9,152,416 and his first WSOP bracelet.
The victory also made Eastgate the first Danish player to win the WSOP Main Event.
At 22, Eastgate broke the Main Event age record previously held by Phil Hellmuth, who was 24 when he won the championship in 1989.
Eastgate's record lasted only one year. Joe Cada won the 2009 WSOP Main Event at age 21, becoming the new youngest champion.
Even with the age record later surpassed, Eastgate's 2008 victory remains one of the most recognizable achievements of the poker boom era. He won the first Main Event completed under the November Nine format and became world champion after entering the tournament as a relatively unknown online professional.

Peter Eastgate After the Main Event
Eastgate did not disappear immediately after his world championship. His 2009 season demonstrated that the Main Event victory was not his only major tournament success.
At the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure in January 2009, Eastgate won a $5,000 no-limit hold'em side event for $343,000.
Later that year, he reached one of the most significant final tables of his career at the European Poker Tour London Main Event. Eastgate finished runner-up to Aaron Gustavson and earned approximately $844,000.
He also returned to the WSOP Main Event in 2009 and made another deep run, reaching the money while attempting to defend his championship.
Eastgate added another major final table in January 2010 when he finished eighth in the EPT Deauville Main Event. By that point, his post-championship record had established that he could compete successfully beyond the tournament that made him famous.

Peter Eastgate’s Playing Style and Poker Background
Before his WSOP victory, Eastgate built much of his reputation online rather than through a long list of live tournament titles.
Reports from the period described him as a high-limit online player with significant heads-up cash-game experience. That background helped distinguish him from players whose careers had developed primarily through traditional casino tournaments.
Eastgate's public demeanor was generally quiet and restrained, but his poker approach was considerably more aggressive. His ability to apply pressure while remaining composed became especially visible during his Main Event run.
His strongest recorded live results overwhelmingly came in no-limit hold'em, the same format in which he had developed much of his professional experience.
Eastgate also appeared in televised cash-game settings after becoming world champion, including High Stakes Poker, giving audiences another look at a player whose reputation had initially been built online.
⠀
Why Did Peter Eastgate Leave Professional Poker?
Eastgate's career took an unusual turn only two years after his Main Event victory.
In 2010, he announced that he was stepping away from professional poker. He later returned for selected events, but the decision effectively ended the intensive tournament schedule that had followed his championship.
In a 2018 interview with ESPN, Eastgate discussed how gambling outside his strongest poker games, including substantial sports betting, had affected his relationship with the industry. He also described becoming tired of having his mood tied so closely to gambling results.
His retirement announcement was not an absolute end to playing poker. Eastgate competed in the 2011 NBC National Heads-Up Poker Championship and returned to the WSOP, including his fourth-place finish in 2012. ESPN also reported that he played the Main Event again in 2015.
Those appearances were exceptions rather than a return to a full professional schedule.
The Hendon Mob's results database lists Eastgate's most recent recorded live tournament cash on May 31, 2013, when he finished 80th in the International Stadiums Poker Tour Main Event in London.
Based on available tournament records and more recent reporting, Eastgate is not currently active as a regular live tournament professional. A 2025 PokerNews retrospective described him as having largely remained outside the poker spotlight.
⠀
What Happened to Peter Eastgate’s WSOP Bracelet?
One of the most unusual chapters of Eastgate's career involved the bracelet he won with the 2008 Main Event.
In 2010, Eastgate placed the championship bracelet on eBay and announced that the proceeds would benefit UNICEF. He explained that he did not have a strong attachment to the jewelry itself and believed selling it for charity would give the bracelet greater value.
The auction ultimately raised $147,500 for UNICEF.
The decision attracted attention because a Main Event bracelet is normally treated as one of poker's most personal trophies. For Eastgate, however, the accomplishment mattered more than possession of the physical award.
The sale became part of his poker story and reinforced how differently he approached the fame and memorabilia associated with becoming world champion.
⠀
Peter Eastgate’s Place in Poker History
Peter Eastgate's career is unusual because its significance is much larger than its duration.
He won poker's most famous tournament at 22, collected more than $9.1 million in a single event and briefly held one of the WSOP's most recognizable age records. He then backed up the championship with significant results on the PCA, EPT and WSOP circuits before moving away from full-time professional poker.
His Main Event victory also arrived at a transitional point for the World Series of Poker. The inaugural November Nine changed how the championship was presented, creating a months-long break before the final table and turning the finalists into recognizable figures before play resumed.
Eastgate became the first champion produced by that format.
Unlike many Main Event winners, he did not spend decades trying to build a larger tournament résumé around his championship. That makes his record distinctive: a short peak highlighted by one of poker's biggest prizes, several additional major final tables and a decision to leave the professional circuit while still relatively young.
Whatever his future involvement in poker, Eastgate's place in WSOP history is secure as the 2008 world champion, Denmark's first Main Event winner and the player who briefly became the youngest champion the tournament had ever seen.
