Pot odds are one of the most useful mathematical concepts a poker player can learn. They tell you how good a price you are being offered to call a bet and help you determine whether continuing with a hand can be profitable over the long run.
The basic idea is simple: compare what you must call with the total amount you can win. Then compare that required percentage with your estimated chance of winning the hand.
For newer and recreational players, learning this process can replace guesswork with a repeatable decision-making system. You do not need advanced mathematics or perfect calculations at the table. Once you understand the formula and practice a few common situations, pot odds can become a practical part of your poker strategy.

What Are Pot Odds in Poker?
Pot odds describe the relationship between the amount of money you must call and the size of the pot you will be competing for after making that call.
Suppose there is $100 in the pot and an opponent bets $50. There is now $150 in the middle, and you must call $50 to continue.
If you call, the final pot before any later betting would be $200:
$100 already in the pot
$50 opponent bet
$50 your call
You are risking $50 for the opportunity to compete for a $200 total pot.
That means your call needs to win often enough to justify investing the additional $50.
Pot odds do not tell you whether your hand will actually win. They tell you the price you are receiving. You then compare that price with your estimated chance of winning.

Why Pot Odds Matter
Poker constantly presents decisions involving risk and reward.
When an opponent bets, you need to decide whether folding, calling, or raising makes the most sense. Pot odds provide a mathematical foundation for the calling part of that decision.
Without pot odds, a player might think:
"I have a flush draw, so I should probably call."
With pot odds, the question becomes more precise:
"Does my chance of completing the flush justify the price this opponent is giving me?"
That distinction is important because the same drawing hand can be a profitable call against one bet size and an unprofitable call against another.
A small bet generally gives you better pot odds. A large bet generally gives you worse pot odds.

How to Calculate Pot Odds as a Percentage
A practical way to use pot odds is to convert the price of a call into a percentage.
Use this formula:
Amount to Call ÷ Total Pot After You Call = Required Equity
The result tells you approximately how often you need to win for a call to break even, before considering factors such as future betting.

Example: Facing a $50 Bet Into a $100 Pot
The pot begins at $100.
Your opponent bets $50.
The pot is now $150.
You must call $50.
After your call, the total pot would be $200.
The calculation is:
$50 ÷ $200 = 0.25
Convert 0.25 to a percentage:
25%
You therefore need approximately 25% equity for a call to break even.
If you estimate that your hand will win more than 25% of the time, calling can be mathematically profitable based on the immediate pot odds.
If you estimate that your hand will win less than 25% of the time, the immediate pot odds do not justify the call.

What Does Equity Mean in Poker?
Equity is your estimated share of the pot based on how often your hand is expected to win.
If a hand has 40% equity against an opponent's likely range, it means the hand would be expected to win approximately 40% of the time in that matchup over a very large number of comparable situations.
Pot odds and equity work together:
Pot odds tell you the minimum equity your call requires.
Hand equity estimates how often you expect to win.
If your equity is higher than the required percentage, the call may be profitable.
If your equity is lower than the required percentage, folding is generally preferable unless other factors provide enough additional value.
Poker decisions are made against ranges of possible hands, not usually against an opponent's exact cards. Your equity estimate therefore depends on what hands you reasonably believe the opponent could hold.

Pot Odds Example With a Flush Draw
Consider a common Texas Hold'em situation.
You hold two hearts, and the flop gives you two additional hearts. You therefore have four hearts between your hole cards and the board and need one more heart to complete a flush.

Assume:
The pot is $100.
Your opponent bets $50 on the flop.
You are considering a call.
Calling would make the total pot $200.
As calculated earlier, you need 25% equity based on your immediate pot odds.
A standard deck contains 13 cards of each suit. If you can see four hearts between your hand and the board, nine hearts remain unseen.
Those nine cards are commonly called outs.
An out is a card that you believe will improve your hand to one that can win.
With only the turn card to come immediately after your flop decision, there are 47 unseen cards and nine hearts that complete the flush. That gives you a little more than a 19% chance of completing the flush on the turn.
Your immediate chance of completing the flush is therefore lower than the 25% required by the pot odds.
If hitting the flush is your only realistic way to win and you are evaluating only the immediate price of seeing the turn, the pot odds are not sufficient for a call.
Real poker situations can be more complicated. Some of your overcards may also be winning outs, some apparent outs may give an opponent a stronger hand, and future betting may change the value of continuing.
The purpose of the example is not to create an automatic rule. It is to show how pot odds provide a framework for evaluating the decision.

How to Calculate Pot Odds as a Ratio
Pot odds can also be expressed as a ratio.
Many poker players discuss the concept this way, and you may frequently hear someone say they are receiving "3-to-1" or "4-to-1" on a call.
Suppose:
There is $100 in the pot.
Your opponent bets $50.
You must call $50.
There is $150 available to win before you make your call.
You are risking $50 to win the $150 already in the middle.
That gives you pot odds of:
$150:$50
Reduce both sides by $50:
3:1
You are receiving 3-to-1 pot odds.
A 3-to-1 price corresponds to a 25% break-even requirement.
The percentage method and ratio method describe the same situation in different ways.
For most beginners, calculating the required percentage is often easier because it can be directly compared with estimated hand equity.

Common Bet Sizes and the Equity You Need
You can speed up decisions by becoming familiar with several common bet sizes.
Opponent Bets One-Quarter Pot
Imagine a $100 pot and a $25 bet.
After calling $25, the total pot would be $150.
$25 ÷ $150 = about 16.7%
You need roughly 17% equity to break even.
Opponent Bets One-Third Pot
Imagine a $100 pot and approximately a $33 bet.
After calling, the final pot would be approximately $166.
$33 ÷ $166 = about 20%
You need roughly 20% equity.
Opponent Bets Half Pot
A $50 bet into a $100 pot produces a $200 pot after your call.
$50 ÷ $200 = 25%
You need 25% equity.
Opponent Bets Two-Thirds Pot
Assume a $100 pot and a bet of about $67.
After calling $67, the total pot would be approximately $234.
$67 ÷ $234 = about 28.6%
You need roughly 29% equity.
Opponent Bets Three-Quarter Pot
Assume a $100 pot and a $75 bet.
After calling, the total pot would be $250.
$75 ÷ $250 = 30%
You need 30% equity.
Opponent Bets the Full Pot
A $100 bet into a $100 pot creates a $300 total pot after your $100 call.
$100 ÷ $300 = about 33.3%
You need roughly 33% equity.
These percentages are useful enough to memorize:
Quarter-pot bet: about 17%
One-third-pot bet: about 20%
Half-pot bet: 25%
Two-thirds-pot bet: about 29%
Three-quarter-pot bet: 30%
Pot-sized bet: about 33%
Memorizing a few common thresholds allows you to estimate pot odds quickly without performing exact division during every hand.

The Pot Odds Formula Step by Step
When facing a call, use this process.
Step 1: Determine the Current Pot
Count the money already in the pot, including the bet you are facing.
If the pot was $80 and your opponent bet $40, there is currently $120 in the middle.
Step 2: Determine the Amount You Must Call
In this example, you must call $40.
Step 3: Add Your Call to Find the Final Pot
$120 + $40 = $160.
Step 4: Divide Your Call by the Final Pot
$40 ÷ $160 = 0.25.
Step 5: Convert the Result to a Percentage
0.25 = 25%.
Step 6: Compare the Percentage With Your Equity
If you estimate that your hand wins more than 25% of the time, the immediate pot odds support calling.
If your hand wins less than 25% of the time, the immediate price does not support the call.

Do Not Forget to Include Your Own Call
One of the most common pot-odds mistakes is dividing the amount of the call by the pot before adding your own call.
Consider the $100 pot and $50 bet example again.
After the opponent bets, there is $150 in the pot.
A player might incorrectly calculate:
$50 ÷ $150 = 33.3%
But that is not the correct break-even percentage.
Your $50 call will also become part of the final pot.
The correct calculation is:
$50 ÷ $200 = 25%
That difference is significant. Using the wrong denominator can cause you to fold profitable calls or misunderstand the price you are receiving.

How Outs Connect to Pot Odds
Pot odds become especially useful when you are drawing to a stronger hand.
An out is an unseen card that you reasonably believe will improve your hand enough to win.
Common examples include:
Cards that complete a flush
Cards that complete a straight
Cards that improve one pair to three of a kind
Overcards that may make a winning top pair
However, not every apparent out is necessarily clean.
A clean out is a card that improves you to a hand that is likely to be best.
Suppose you have a flush draw on a paired board. Some flush cards might complete your flush while still leaving you behind an opponent who already has a full house or who improves to one.
Similarly, an ace may appear to be an out for your Ace-King, but it may not help if the opponent already holds a stronger made hand.
This is why counting outs should involve poker reasoning rather than simple arithmetic.

The Rule of 2 and 4
Players often use the "Rule of 2 and 4" to estimate drawing probabilities quickly at the table.
It is a shortcut rather than an exact calculation.
When there is one card to come, multiply your number of outs by approximately 2.
When you expect to see both the turn and river without facing another decision, multiply your number of outs by approximately 4.
For example, a nine-out flush draw gives a rough estimate of:
9 × 2 = about 18% with one card to come
9 × 4 = about 36% with two cards to come
The exact probabilities differ slightly, but the shortcut is useful for fast estimates.
There is an important strategic limitation: on the flop, you cannot automatically compare your chance of hitting by the river with the immediate price of a flop call if your opponent may bet again on the turn.
