Counting your outs is one of the first poker-math skills worth learning because it helps answer a question that comes up constantly after the flop: how many cards can improve your hand?

An out is an unseen card that improves your hand in a meaningful way. If you have a flush draw, for example, the remaining cards of that suit may be outs. If you have an open-ended straight draw, cards at either end of the sequence may complete your straight.

Counting those cards correctly gives you a starting point for estimating how often you will improve and whether continuing in the hand makes sense.

This guide is designed for newer Texas Hold'em players. It explains how to count outs, how common draws work, why some apparent outs should not be counted, and how to convert your outs into a quick estimate of your chances of improving.

What Are Outs in Poker?

In poker, an out is an unseen card that can come on a future street and improve your hand to a hand you expect to be strong enough to win.

The important part of that definition is not simply "a card that improves your hand."

A card should generally be counted as a useful out only when hitting it is likely to leave you with a winning hand.

Suppose you hold A♠ 7♠ and the flop is K♠ 9♠ 2♦.

You currently have ace-high, but you also have four spades between your hole cards and the board. One more spade would give you a flush.

There are 13 spades in the deck. You can already see four of them:

  • A♠

  • 7♠

  • K♠

  • 9♠

That leaves nine unseen spades.

You therefore have nine apparent outs to make a flush.

This type of counting is the foundation of postflop poker math.

Why Counting Outs Matters

Knowing your outs helps you estimate how likely your hand is to improve.

That information can then become part of a larger decision involving:

  • The size of the pot

  • The size of the bet you are facing

  • Your position

  • Your opponent's likely range

  • Whether your draw makes a strong or vulnerable hand

  • How much money or how many chips remain behind

Counting outs does not automatically tell you whether to call, fold, bet, or raise.

It gives you one important piece of information.

Strong poker decisions come from combining that information with the price you are being offered and the likely strength of your opponent's hand.

How to Count Your Outs Step by Step

A beginner-friendly method is to work through the hand in the same order every time.

Step 1: Identify Your Current Hand

Before counting cards that help you, determine what you have right now.

For example, you may currently have:

  • Ace-high

  • One pair

  • Two pair

  • A straight draw

  • A flush draw

  • Both a straight draw and a flush draw

Step 2: Identify the Hand You Are Trying to Make

Ask which future cards would give you a substantially stronger hand.

If you have four cards to a flush, you are looking for another card of that suit.

If you have four consecutive ranks with an open end on each side, you may be drawing to a straight.

If you have one pair, another card of the same rank could make three of a kind.

Step 3: Count the Unseen Cards That Complete That Hand

Start with the total number of possible cards and subtract the relevant cards you can already see.

For a flush draw, there are 13 cards in each suit.

If four cards of your suit are already visible between your hole cards and the board:

13 - 4 = 9

You have nine remaining cards of that suit.

Step 4: Remove Questionable or Duplicate Outs

This is where counting becomes more important than simply memorizing common numbers.

Some cards may appear to help but could also improve an opponent to a better hand.

Other cards may complete two of your draws at the same time and should only be counted once.

The goal is to count realistic winning outs, not every card that makes your hand look prettier.

Common Poker Draws and Their Outs

Several drawing situations appear frequently enough that beginners should learn their standard out counts.

Flush Draw: Usually 9 Outs

Suppose you hold A♣ 6♣ and the flop is K♣ 10♣ 3♦.

You have four clubs visible:

  • A♣

  • 6♣

  • K♣

  • 10♣

There are 13 clubs in the deck, leaving nine unseen clubs.

You therefore have nine cards that can complete your flush.

That does not necessarily mean all nine cards guarantee you the pot. If the board is paired, or if your flush would not be the highest possible flush, the situation can be more complicated.

Open-Ended Straight Draw: Usually 8 Outs

Suppose you hold 8♣ 7♦ and the flop is 6♠ 5♥ K♣.

You have:

5-6-7-8

A 4 would complete:

4-5-6-7-8

A 9 would complete:

5-6-7-8-9

There are four fours and four nines in the deck.

That gives you eight outs:

  • Four 4s

  • Four 9s

This is called an open-ended straight draw because either end of the sequence can be completed.

Gutshot Straight Draw: Usually 4 Outs

A gutshot, or inside straight draw, needs one specific rank to fill a gap.

Suppose you hold 8♣ 7♦ and the flop is 10♠ 6♥ 2♣.

You have:

6-7-8-10

Only a 9 completes your straight.

There are four nines in the deck, so you have four outs.

This is why a gutshot is substantially less likely to improve than an open-ended straight draw.

Two Overcards: Up to 6 Apparent Outs

Suppose you hold A♠ K♦ and the flop is 9♣ 6♥ 2♠.

If you believe your opponent currently has a pair such as pocket eights, an ace or king could move you ahead.

There are three unseen aces and three unseen kings.

That gives you as many as six apparent outs.

But this is an excellent example of why outs cannot always be counted mechanically.

If your opponent has 9-9, an ace or king does not rescue you. If your opponent has A-9, an ace could improve both players while leaving you behind.

Overcard outs therefore depend heavily on what your opponent may hold.

One Pair Improving to Trips or Two Pair: Usually 5 Outs

Suppose you hold A♠ 8♦ on an A♣ J♥ 4♠ flop.

You have one pair: aces.

There are two remaining aces that can give you three of a kind.

There are three remaining eights that can give you two pair.

That produces five cards that improve your hand significantly:

  • Two aces

  • Three eights

However, improving does not always mean winning. If an opponent already has two pair or a set, some of those cards may not give you the best hand.

Do Not Double-Count Outs

Combo draws can create one of the most common beginner mistakes.

Imagine you have both a straight draw and a flush draw.

You might count:

  • 9 flush outs

  • 8 straight outs

Then conclude that you have 17 outs.

But some cards may complete both your straight and your flush.

Those cards belong to both categories, but they exist only once in the deck.

If two cards complete both draws, the correct calculation would be:

9 + 8 - 2 = 15 unique outs

The principle is simple:

Count cards, not categories.

Every physical card can only be one out, no matter how many different improvements it creates.

What Are Dirty or Tainted Outs?

Not every apparent out is equally valuable.

A dirty or tainted out is a card that improves your hand but may still leave an opponent with an even stronger hand.

For example, suppose you are drawing to a queen-high flush. A card that completes your flush certainly improves your hand, but it may not be a clean out if an opponent can reasonably hold the ace-high flush.

You should therefore ask:

"If this card comes, how confident am I that I actually have the best hand?"

The less confidently you can answer that question, the less valuable that out becomes.

Advanced players sometimes discount questionable outs rather than treating them as fully clean. Beginners do not need to assign perfect fractional values, but they should learn not to assume every improving card guarantees victory.

Clean Outs vs. Apparent Outs

A useful distinction is:

  • Apparent outs are cards that improve your hand.

  • Clean outs are cards that are highly likely to give you the winning hand.

The second number is usually more useful.

For example, an ace-high flush draw on an unpaired board generally has cleaner outs than a small flush draw on a coordinated board.

Similarly, an open-ended straight draw may have eight apparent outs, but some of those cards can be less valuable when they also complete an obvious flush or when your opponent can make a higher straight.

Poker is a game of incomplete information, so you usually cannot know the exact number of clean outs.

The goal is to make the best estimate possible using the information available.

How to Turn Outs Into Probabilities

Once you know your outs, you can estimate how often you will improve.

On the flop in Texas Hold'em, you know five cards:

  • Your two hole cards

  • Three flop cards

That leaves 47 unseen cards.

If you have nine outs to a flush, your chance of hitting one on the next card is:

9 ÷ 47

That is about 19%.

If you miss on the turn, there are then 46 unseen cards before the river.

You do not need to perform exact calculations like this during every hand. Poker players commonly use a faster shortcut.

The Rule of 2 and 4

When one card is still to come, multiply your outs by about 2.

When you are on the flop and expect to see both the turn and river, multiply your outs by about 4.

For a nine-out flush draw:

  • One card to come: 9 × 2 = about 18%

  • Two cards to come: 9 × 4 = about 36%

The exact probabilities are approximately 19% to hit on the next card and 35% to hit by the river when starting from the flop.

The shortcut is not exact, but it is convenient enough for many decisions at the table.

Open-Ended Straight Draw Example

An open-ended straight draw normally has eight outs.

Using the shortcut:

  • One card to come: 8 × 2 = about 16%

  • Two cards to come: 8 × 4 = about 32%

The exact probabilities are about 17% on the next card and 31% by the river from the flop.

Gutshot Example

A gutshot normally has four outs.

Using the shortcut:

  • One card to come: 4 × 2 = about 8%

  • Two cards to come: 4 × 4 = about 16%

The exact probabilities are about 8.5% on the next card and 16.5% by the river from the flop.

These examples show why the shortcut is useful: it gives you a fast estimate without requiring detailed arithmetic while action is on you.

Why "Two Cards to Come" Can Be Misleading

There is an important practical difference between having two community cards remaining and actually getting to see both of them.

Suppose you are on the flop and calculate that your draw has roughly a 35% chance to improve by the river.

That percentage assumes you get to see both the turn and river.

But if you call a flop bet, miss the turn, and then face another large bet that forces you to fold, you never realize your full two-card probability.

For many ordinary flop decisions, the probability of hitting on the next card can therefore be more immediately useful than the probability of hitting by the river.

This is one reason counting outs is only part of poker strategy. Future betting matters too.

Outs and Pot Odds Work Together

Knowing that you have a 19% chance to hit your draw on the next card does not tell you by itself whether calling is profitable.

You also need to know what price the pot is offering you.

Pot odds compare the amount you must call with the total pot you can win.

For example, suppose the pot is $100 and an opponent bets $25.

If you call $25, the final pot before any later betting will be $150:

  • $100 already in the pot

  • $25 opponent bet

  • $25 your call

You are risking $25 to compete for $150.

Your required equity from the immediate pot odds is:

25 ÷ 150 = about 16.7%

If you have a clean nine-out draw with roughly a 19% chance to hit on the next card, your drawing probability is greater than that immediate requirement.

Real hands can still involve additional factors such as future betting, implied odds, position, and whether your outs are clean, but this illustrates why counting outs matters.

The number of outs becomes strategically useful when you connect it to the price of continuing.

Example: Counting a Flush Draw Correctly

Suppose you are playing a $1/$2 cash game with $200 effective stacks.

You hold A♥ 9♥ on the button.

The flop is:

K♥ 7♥ 3♣

An opponent bets.

First identify your current hand.

You have ace-high.

Next identify your draw.

You have four hearts and need one more heart to make a flush.

You can see four hearts:

  • A♥

  • 9♥

  • K♥

  • 7♥

There are nine hearts remaining.

Because your ace would give you the highest possible heart flush, those flush outs are especially valuable.

Your approximate chance of completing the flush on the turn is about:

9 × 2 = 18%

Your exact probability is a little over 19%.

If you expect to see both remaining cards, your approximate chance of completing the flush by the river is:

9 × 4 = 36%

The exact probability is about 35%.

You can now compare those chances with the pot odds and other strategic factors before deciding how to proceed.

Example: Counting a Straight Draw Correctly

You hold 9♠ 8♣.

The flop is:

7♦ 6♥ A♣

You have an open-ended straight draw.

A 5 gives you:

5-6-7-8-9

A 10 gives you:

6-7-8-9-10

There are four fives and four tens.

That gives you eight outs.

Your approximate chance of hitting on the turn is:

8 × 2 = 16%

Your exact chance is about 17%.

Your approximate chance of making the straight by the river if you see both cards is:

8 × 4 = 32%

The exact probability is a little over 31%.

The next step is not automatically "call."

You still need to consider the bet size, your opponent's range, stack depth, position, and whether all eight outs are likely to be clean.

Common Mistakes When Counting Poker Outs

Learning to count outs is straightforward. Learning to count them accurately requires more discipline.

Counting Cards That Do Not Actually Put You Ahead

A card can improve your hand without giving you the best hand.

Moving from ace-high to one pair is an improvement, but that pair is not a useful out if your opponent already has a set.

Think about the opponent's likely holdings before treating a card as clean.

Double-Counting Combo-Draw Outs

If one card completes both your straight and your flush, count that physical card once.

Do not add every draw's theoretical out total without checking for overlap.

Treating Every Out as Guaranteed

Poker involves hidden cards.

Even apparently clean outs can occasionally leave you behind.

Think in probabilities, not guarantees.

Counting Outs Before Reading the Board

Start by accurately reading your hand and the community cards.

Trying to calculate outs before identifying your current hand often leads to mistakes.

Using the Rule of 4 When You May Only See One Card

Multiplying by four estimates your chance of improving across both remaining streets from the flop.

If you may face another bet on the turn, you cannot assume you will automatically see the river.

Ignoring the Opponent's Range

The same card can be a clean out against one hand and nearly worthless against another.

If you hold A-K on a low board, an ace may be an excellent out against pocket queens but a poor one against a set.

You rarely know an opponent's exact cards, so think in terms of plausible ranges rather than one imagined hand.

Assuming More Outs Always Means a Better Decision

Having many outs is helpful, but the price of continuing still matters.

A strong draw can be too expensive to chase if the bet is large enough.

A weaker draw can sometimes continue when the price is unusually favorable.

Outs and pot odds belong together.

How Position Affects Drawing Hands

Position does not change the number of cards in the deck, but it can affect how effectively you realize the value of your outs.

When you act later in the betting order, you have more information about what your opponents have done before making your decision.

That can make it easier to control the size of the pot, take a free card when checked to, or extract value after completing a draw.

Counting Outs Is an Estimate, Not Perfect Knowledge

You will rarely know exactly how many winning outs you have because you cannot see your opponent's cards.

That uncertainty is normal.

The objective is not to produce a mathematically perfect number every time.

The objective is to develop a disciplined process:

  • Read your current hand correctly.

  • Identify realistic ways to improve.

  • Count the unseen cards that produce those improvements.

  • Remove duplicate outs.

  • Question dirty or dominated outs.

  • Estimate your probability.

  • Compare that probability with the price and situation.

As your ability to read ranges improves, your estimates of clean outs will improve with it.

Practical Poker Outs Checklist

Before continuing with a draw, run through this quick mental checklist:

  • What is my current hand?

  • What stronger hand am I drawing toward?

  • Which exact ranks or suits complete that hand?

  • How many of those cards remain unseen?

  • Have I counted any card twice?

  • Could some apparent outs still leave me behind?

  • Do I have one card to come or am I realistically likely to see two?

  • What is my approximate chance of hitting?

  • What price am I being offered to continue?

  • What happens if I hit my draw?

  • What happens if I miss?

You will not need to consciously ask every question forever.

With practice, much of the process becomes automatic.
